Incident Narrative:
Alaska Airlines Flight 2059, operated by Horizon Air using an Embraer E175, departed Everett, Washington, bound for San Francisco. While cruising over Oregon, an off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot who was occupying the cockpit jumpseat attempted to activate the emergency fire-suppression handles for the aircraft’s engines, an action that would have shut down both engines. The operating flight crew physically intervened and restrained him. The aircraft made an emergency diversion to Portland International Airport, Oregon, where it landed safely. The individual was removed from the aircraft and taken into custody by law enforcement. No passengers or crew were physically injured.

Probable Cause (Preliminary):
Intentional interference with flight operations by an off-duty pilot seated in the cockpit jumpseat.

Contributing Factors:
Mental health crisis experienced by the off-duty pilot.
Access to the flight deck jumpseat by a non-operating crew member.
Delay in recognizing the seriousness of the interference attempt.
