Hi, my name is Heather Ford and I am a traffic attorney out of New Orleans, known as the Traffic Ticket Lady. And today I just want to talk a little bit about what it's like to handle a ticket out of New Orleans, just to give you information about the court, maybe where you go to do things, things of that nature.
Before we started, if you ever have a question about suspended license, traffic tickets, I'd be happy to help, you know. Shoot me a text at 504-233-8529 or you can go to trafficticketlady.com.
So New Orleans Traffic Court which is more accurately New Orleans Traffic & Municipal Court is located in 727 South Broad Street. So it's basically right underneath the underpass behind the big court that everybody knows the criminal court at Tulane and Broad. It’s basically right behind it.
And if you want to fight a ticket that you've received, the process is going to be a two-step system. In New Orleans, you have to make your initial appearance that's the date at the bottom of your ticket is basically and appear by date. So for a basic traffic ticket, anytime that ticket hits the system, which basically means that you can call in give some information about, you give them the ticket number and they can tell you what's going on with that ticket. At that point the ticket has entered the system.
And from there, you could go into the courtroom, I mean to the clerk's office, which is 108, anytime before or on the court date, and get a court date. And then at that point when you go in to set the ticket, the ticket is placed in a division. For right now they have a few divisions. Division A is with Judge Sens and that’s at 9am. The division B with Judge Jones, which is also at 9AM. We have division D with Judge Shea. That’s also going to be at 9am. Division E with Judge Early is also a 9am. Division F with Judge Landry is that 3pm, and division of G with Judge Jupiter is at 2pm, and division H with Judge Cade is also at 2pm.
So those things can fluctuate. But that's what's going on as of right now. And so your traffic ticket will end up in one of those divisions, and you'll be given a date to come back and go watch at that time. When you come back, that's when you'll be given an opportunity to talk with the assistant city attorney. And usually, to goal in these cases, of course, I mean, getting a ticket dismissed is always great. But the most important outcome, if you have a moving violation is to get their ticket reduced to something non-moving. That's something that will be neutral on your insurance rate, neutral on your driving record. And that's really important because otherwise, you know, these tickets can have consequences you can't quite conceive of.
So if you talk to the assistant city attorney and you guys are able to come to an agreement, at that point, you'll get an opportunity to go back in into the court. And the court will give you an opportunity to get on a payment plan. Usually, they give you 30 days to make your first payment. And you can pay online every month until it's paid off. And usually, you go to either room 106 or 107 to set up that payment plan.
If for whatever reason, you can't come to an agreement with the city attorney about the case. Most likely you're going to have to go to trial. Usually, that’s probably unlikely to happen on that first court date that you attend. The way the court works is that they'll give a courtesy continuance to either side. So it's not just something that they give to the city or state it’s something that they give to you as well....
