Aloha! 🌈 We are Alexus and Michi: PhD students and an international (Mexican American German) LGBT couple at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, located in Honolulu, Hawaii (Oahu). Alexus is a fourth year PhD student studying Biological Oceanography (Marine Ecology, Deep-sea Biology) and Michi is a fifth year PhD student studying Second Language Studies (Applied Linguistics, Language Teaching).

In today’s PhD student life vlog, Alexus and Michi are talking about what married life is like as a LGBT PhD student couple. We dive deep into the question, should you date another PhD student or graduate student in grad school? We talk about the pros and cons (or advantages and disadvantages) of dating another PhD student or graduate student during your PhD program. We share this dating and relationship during graduate school advice from our own experience as a married PhD student couple that met early on in our graduate school journeys. The pros of dating another PhD student will be focused around the importance of having a partner that understands your current situation, is a great support system, and has a flexible schedule similar to you. The cons of dating another PhD graduate student will be focused around the common stressors that PhD students have such as working long hours, having very busy schedules, having high stress, and stressing about money on a PhD student salary. We share our own personal experiences dating during graduate school, being a married PhD student couple, and dating another PhD student.
