A frequent target of President Donald Trump's name-calling comes to Rhode Island.
Fresh off the first interest rate cut in nine months, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell spoke Tuesday at an event for the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce in Warwick.
Powell defended the move to hold off on a rate cut until last week, and he responded to one criticism he takes exception to.
Trump has called Powell a “dummy,” “stupid,” a “numbskull,” “too late” and “too political,” as he tried to pressure the Fed to cut rates over the summer.
“Mostly, people who are calling us ‘political,’ it’s just a cheap shot,” Powell said, at the end of his comments at the Crowne Plaza.
