[2026] PWCS All-County Honor Band - "Our Cast Aways"

this piece is about dogs, but also presumably rescue animals in general. this came as a surprise to me, because i interpreted "castaways" as in like people lost at sea and boats and stuff (the castaways song from backyardigans also comes to mind) and this is also how i read the description at the top of the piece. very slow, beautiful lyrical piece, but make sure to watch dr. cicconi because there's a lot of slowing down and tempo fluctuations. speaking of him, he is a very cool conductor to watch. he assumes this really cool power stance type of thing and is always very flowy with his movements. this was something i never really appreciated in the moment, but he is a pretty good conductor and is good at cues and stuff. like all of his movements really encouraged everyone to try and match that.

i think the ending is especially beautiful. like, the sustaining flute and clarinet stuff as the band goes in and out. that's very nice.
