Описание: Eastleach is a village located in the Cotswolds, a picturesque region in southwest England. It is actually divided into two parts: Eastleach Martin (also known as Great Eastleach) and Eastleach Turville (Little Eastleach), which are situated on opposite sides of the River Leach.

The history of Eastleach dates back to the Roman period, as evidenced by the remains of a Roman villa discovered in the area. The village itself, however, emerged as a Saxon settlement in the 8th century. The name "Eastleach" is derived from the Old English words "east" (meaning east) and "leac" (meaning stream), referring to its location on the eastern side of the River Leach.

During the medieval period, Eastleach became a prosperous agricultural village. It was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was recorded as Estleche, and it was listed as having a church, a mill, and arable land. The two parts of the village, Eastleach Martin and Eastleach Turville, were distinct manors with their own manor houses and estates.

St. Michael and St. Martin's Church, located in Eastleach Martin, is a notable historical landmark in the village. The church dates back to the 12th century and features Norman and Gothic architectural elements. It has a unique wooden spire that is visible from a distance and is often referred to as the "Cathedral of the Cotswolds."


In the 19th century, Eastleach experienced some industrial development with the construction of a water mill and a steam mill. However, the village remained predominantly agricultural, with farming being the primary occupation of its residents.

Today, Eastleach retains much of its historic charm and is known for its picturesque cottages, stone bridges, and tranquil countryside setting. It has become a popular destination for visitors interested in experiencing the Cotswolds' traditional English village atmosphere and exploring its rich history.
