June CPI fell 0.4%, the biggest monthly drop since April 2020, and every headline in America called it a victory. It wasn't. The entire decline came from energy prices that collapsed during a ceasefire that has already fallen apart, and underneath the print, US M2 just hit a record $22.8 trillion while federal debt crossed $39.4 trillion. Inflation has now run above the Fed's 2% target for 64 consecutive months.

Kevin Warsh has a problem. He needs to cut rates into a $1.37 trillion deficit, and the Fed's official inflation gauge won't let him. So he's building the machinery to swap it for a cooler one, which would turn a 3.4% problem into a 2.4% "we're basically there" without a single price falling.
