Based on extensive research conducted in over a dozen archives and using sources in six languages, Burak Sayım’s project examines the communist networks across the borders of the Middle East and North Africa region. In particular, it looks at the fledgling communist organizations' interaction with anti-colonial rebellions and actors, as well as the emerging national frameworks.
The project pays particular attention to the daily practices of militancy – from cross-border activities to the question of language or prison life. Furthermore, it shows how the extensive cross-national circulation of militants, publications and ideas was a testimony to the resilience of regional and trans-regional radical connections of the Ottoman period.
