Have you ever wondered how your automobile ride is so smooth despite the bumps in the road? This is because of the presence of shock absorbers, which absorb the shocks and vibrations. This mechanism is known as damping, and it is present in most engineered systems, thus it is critical to account for it in the analysis. But unlike elastic modulus, damping cannot be directly measured, and it is often estimated via testing or other industrial practices. In this video, we will learn how to define different types of damping in dynamic analyses using the mode superposition solution methodology in Ansys Mechanical.
