3D shadow boxes/mandalas are all the rage so I felt compelled to make one. Since cutting paper and cardstock is one of the things the Brother ScanNCut machines do best, cutting the layers for this design was pretty easy. There are a few steps you have to take first in Brother Canvas WorkSpace but they aren’t too difficult and I show you the entire process. After cutting all the layers, assembly takes a while but I offer some tips on how to speed things up and what would have helped me to do it faster. The result is super study, overall very easy and it looks great!
STEPS TO MAKE A 3D SHADOW BOX:
1. Download the SVG file and open in Brother Canvas Workspace
2. Pull the layers apart to see each one
3. Decide what colors of cardstock you want to use for each layer
4. Change the size (if needed) and color of each layer in Canvas WorkSpace to match the chosen cardstock
5. Align all layers to see what they will look like now that the size and colors are changed
6. Using a 12” x 24” mat allows you to cut two layers at a time so change the mat size in Canvas WorkSpace if needed
7. Drag the top two layers of the shadowbox on to the mat
8. “Hide” the remaining layers that aren’t on the mat
9. Export the FCM file to the ScanNCut machine
10. Retrieve the data file on the machine and set to Cut
11. Load the mat with the first two colors of cardstock
12. Load mat into the machine and hit Start
13. The ScanNCut will cut the layers; check them before unloading the mat
14. Remove the cut layers and excess cardstock
15. Return to Canvas WorkSpace and drag the cut layers off the mat
16. Turn on the visibility for the next two layers and drag on to the mat
17. Hide the two previous layers and export the file to the machine
18. Retrieve the file at the machine, load the mat and cut
19. Repeat this process for all remaining layers
20. Assemble all layers using foam tape
21. Enjoy!
