The White-rumped Falcon is one of the smallest falcons in the world, yet it is a bold and highly skilled predator. It is easily recognized by its striking black-and-white plumage, bright white rump, and upright, alert posture when perched. Despite its small size, this falcon shows remarkable confidence and agility. This species inhabits open woodlands, forest edges, savannas, and agricultural landscapes, often perching on exposed branches, dead trees, or utility poles. It is commonly found in Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, where it hunts during the daytime.
The White-rumped Falcon feeds mainly on large insects, lizards, small birds, and rodents. It hunts by watching from a perch and then making a fast, direct strike on its prey. Its sharp eyesight and quick reflexes make it an efficient hunter. Often seen alone or in pairs, this falcon is territorial and may aggressively chase away birds much larger than itself. Its call is a sharp, high-pitched whistle, usually heard during the breeding season.
