Hubbub (Horn Octet) by David McCaulley

I have always been drawn to the sound of the French horn. For
multiple reasons ranging from its wide range in timbrel qualities
to its epic use in symphonies and film scores, I’ve been drawn to
the horn’s power, delicacy, and richness. It’s these qualities and
my own excited perception of the horn that I wanted to capture
in this piece. When sketching the melodic and harmonic
materials, the sounds of the horn were pulling me into this old-
fashioned art-deco landscape, perhaps with towering skyscrapers
or perhaps a soaring comic book superhero. This urban picture
is ultimately what the final version of this piece is painting: the
rushing cars, the vast buildings, the distant peace, and perhaps
the old-fashioned heroic undertones embedded in that space.
Throughout the piece, you’ll hear several melodic and textural
ideas that each represent a part of this bustling world, all coming
together to create a hubbub of sights and sounds.
