Magere, also known as “The Slayer,” is a figure of folklore in Kenya and Tanzania. According to legend, Magere was a powerful and feared warrior who could transform into a lion or hyena and wreak havoc on his enemies. He was said to have been almost impossible to defeat, as any weapons that were used against him would simply bounce off.
People say that Magere lived in the forests and hills, hunting wild animals and terrorizing travelers who passed through his territory. But despite his fearsome reputation, some say that Magere had a soft spot for children. He would often leave offerings of food and trinkets for them, and wouldn’t harm anyone who was pure of heart.
One day, a group of warriors from a neighboring tribe came to challenge Magere to a battle, determined to defeat him and put an end to his reign of terror. But no matter how hard they fought, they just couldn’t seem to harm him. That was when one of the warriors remembered the story about Magere’s love for children. He grabbed a small child from the village and held him in front of Magere, daring him to attack.
According to legend, Magere was so taken aback by this that he momentarily lost his powers. In that moment, the warriors were able to strike and kill him. And so, the legend of Magere as a powerful and feared warrior came to an end.
Today, people in Kenya and Tanzania still tell the story of Magere, and his name is still used to scare children into behaving. But despite the fear he once inspired, he’s also remembered as a protector of children and a symbol of the power of innocence.
