Advocates and lawmakers at the State Capitol on Thursday called for more protections for Georgia’s Latino community amid increasing immigration arrests and detentions.
Around 100 community members met with lawmakers during the fourth annual Latino Day at the Legislature, where some first-generation voters learned how to navigate Georgia’s political system, and advocates asked for sustained support of Latino communities.
Here’s Georgia State Senator Rashaun Kemp of Atlanta:
"When we talk about Georgia's future, we have to talk about Latino children. more than 90% are born in America, and they make up nearly one in five students in our schools. They are not the future, they are our present."
Advocates described how Latino families across the state fear sending their children to school. In 2025, the Trump administration rescinded a long-standing policy that deterred immigration enforcement activities in 'protected' areas.
