1LifeLive Building Off Road Overland 4x4 Truck Jeep SUV Vehicle Tips video in 4k.
Hello this is J L Zaring and I am discussing building tips and info for off road vehicles!
Basic Tips for Building your Off Road Rig:
1. Body lift is usually counterproductive, raising the overall weight too high for off road. If done, do a mild lift just to help clear for taller suspension articulation to help tire clearance, not looks. 2.5” is usually considered mild. For Jeeps with 37"+ tires a body lift for correct tire / suspension articulation clearance is around a 3.5" body lift and NOTE: even though a body lift on a Jeep raises the top and center body & pan it still not does not raise the live axles which many people get confused about.
2. Suspension lift works differently on different vehicles. On independent suspension, it can actually lift all the differentials and vehicle higher off the ground (to a point before the control arms bind and top out). On live axle rigs, suspension does not lift the live axles higher off the ground when standing at a rest, however, when going over rough terrain, having longer travel will give you taller articulation of the suspension, hence it articulates higher off the ground compared to stock and helps keep all four tires on the ground for powered traction.
3. Use the largest tires (mud or A/T) possible that are efficient for your vehicle as this is the quickest and easiest way to add lift clearance to your vehicle. The key word is “efficient”. Adding larger tires can cause domino effects to where you might then need more tire wheel-well clearance, stronger axles, gearing changes, mild cutting, etc, to name a few examples. Size 35” tires are an all around good, large size, usually not needing too much enhancements to accommodate the tires. The 17” wheel is a universal common wheel size for off road as it gives a good amount of tire rubber to add cushion and more tire contact patch on the ground when airing down.
4. Try to clean up front and rear clearance such as bumpers and exhaust pipes that can get in the way of rocks and approach angles of trails and hills.
5. Wheelbase can add factors of catching the center of your rig to the ground (lots of names for this). A good round about wheelbase length is more or less around 120 inches. Four door trucks are usually longer, around 130”+ so keep that in mind as larger tires can surely help such as on the Ford Raptor, which a lot of guys run 37” to help compensate for the longer wheelbase.
6. Winch helps get you out of trouble and same with good recovery points mounted on the frame
7. Beadlock rings help keep your tires on the wheel when aired down low.
8. Skid plates and Rock sliders (mounted on the frame) help greatly with protection.
9. Good lighting front and rear (you will be backing up many times!)
10. CB radio to talk to your buddies
11. Roof rack to help carry things
12. Full size spare
13. High-lift Jack with ground base and attachments to lift saftely
14. 4x4 system better than an open differential system: limited slip, lockers, system that mimics lockers, etc.
15. Always have tools, recover gear, safety gear and emergency gear (coming in future videos).
16. For extreme off road, having some method to remove or disconnect front sway bar can help with front suspension articulation.
