The four largest moons, known as the Galilean moons, were first discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610. They are Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.
Io is the innermost of the Galilean moons and is the most volcanically active object in the solar system. It has a highly active surface with hundreds of active volcanoes spewing out lava and sulfur compounds.
Europa is the smallest of the Galilean moons and has a smooth icy surface. Scientists believe it has a subsurface ocean of liquid water that could potentially harbor life.
Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system and the only moon known to have its own magnetic field. It has a rocky core, a layer of liquid water, and an icy crust.
Callisto is the most heavily cratered object in the solar system. It has a mixture of ice and rock on its surface and may have a subsurface ocean of liquid water.
Jupiter's other moons vary greatly in size, composition, and characteristics. Some notable examples include Amalthea, a small, irregularly shaped moon with a highly reflective surface.
