In Brancaleone, Italy, a turtle hospital is busy rescuing and rehabilitating 50 turtles a year. The carers say one out of every two turtles they rescue have eaten plastic. The plastic problem is global. And research has found that sea turtles are likely to confuse plastic for food because it looks and smells like food.
Last month, the turtle hospital released Futura, a three-legged turtle who was found caught in nylon ropes. The hospital had to amputate her leg when the tangle cut off circulation to her limb.
