Your medication Premarin
Premarin comes in 0.3, 0.45, 0.625, 0.9, and 1.25 mg tablets.
Premarin is most commonly used for the purpose of adding estrogen to the body when the ovaries have been taken out or do not work properly and also to prevent or lower the signs of menopause. It may be given to you for other reasons, talk with your doctor or pharmacist. No matter what your doctor has you taking Premarin for, it should be taken by mouth at the same time each day. If it causes an upset stomach, you can take it with food.
If you miss a dose of Premarin:
• Take the missed dose as soon as you think about it
• If it is close to your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your usual time
• Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses
The best way to store Premarin:
• Store at room temperature
• Store in a dry place. Avoid the bathroom and refrigerator
• Keep all drugs in a safe place out of reach from children and pets
• Check with your pharmacist about how to throw out unused drugs
Usual doses of Premarin range from 0.3mg to 1.25 mg.
Some common side effects with Premarin include headache, abdominal pain, and back pain.
Some less common side effects include depression, dizziness, nervousness, itching, diarrhea, weakness, and leg cramps.
Do not take Premarin if:
• You have or have a history of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism
• You have a history of a stroke or heart attack
• You have breast cancer
• You are pregnant
Premarin comes with the US Black Box warnings of:
• Endometrial cancer
o There is an increased risk of developing endometrial cancer if a woman who has a uterus takes Premarin
• Cardiovascular disease
o Estrogen therapy, such as Premarin, should not be used alone for the prevention of cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women. If used alone, it can lead to increased risk of stroke and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
• Breast cancer
o There is an increased risk of breast cancer when using estrogen plus progestin therapy.
• Increase Dementia
o There is an increased risk of developing dementia if taking estrogen therapy alone in post-menopausal women.
When taking Premarin, remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have:
• Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash; hives; itching; blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever
• Chest pain or pressure
• Shortness of breath
• Coughing up blood
• Weakness on 1 side of the body, trouble speaking or thinking, change in balance, or blurred eyesight
• Very bad headache
• Very bad dizziness or passing out
• Change in eyesight
• Breast pain
• A lump in the breast, breast soreness
