Witness the excitement of a lively festival parade as it winds through city streets, showcasing colorful parade floats and energetic dancers. This full parade captures the festive event with participants in elaborate costumes and music filling the air. People line the sidewalks, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and dancing along to the rhythm.
It was the 10th (anniversary) edition, on 23 June 2019 (Sunday).
Manchester Day Parade (or simply Manchester Day) is an annual free, family-friendly event celebrating the cultural diversity, communities and spirit of Manchester and Greater Manchester. It is organised by Manchester City Council, in partnership with outdoor arts company Walk the Plank, and involves thousands of participants from community groups, artists, bands, schools and local organisations.
History and development
• It began in 2010 as a parade inspired by the New York Thanksgiving Parade, with the aim of uniting the city's diverse communities (the first edition had over 1,800 participants from 90 groups).
• It took place annually in June (usually on a Sunday) until around 2019–2020.
• It has been discontinued or significantly modified in the post-pandemic period (2020–2024), becoming smaller or replaced by alternative events.
• In 2025, it returned in force on 26 July (Saturday), with a mini-parade on Deansgate starting at 12:00, led by fantastical creatures (giant griffins, dancing birds, phoenixes, etc.), followed by a festival throughout the city centre with pop-up performances, acrobatics, music and family-friendly activities. Over 50,000 people attended the 2025 edition.
2019 edition (the one I featured here)
• It was the 10th (anniversary) edition, on 23 June 2019 (Sunday).
• Theme: “10 out of 10” – celebrating the excellence of the city’s diversity.
• Over 40 community groups participated with elaborate floats, spectacular costumes, street performers and performances.
• Typical route: starting from areas such as St Ann’s Square / Cathedral Gardens / Deansgate, with thousands of spectators lining the streets.
• It included elements such as percussion bands (e.g. Battle of Manchester), scouts, Indian, Chinese cultural groups etc., and was described as a colourful carnival of diversity.
