What are image rights? Originally they were part of a player’s contract, when playing in Italy in the 1990s, to reward a player for their off-field exploits.

They have become a lot complicated since then. As Nick Harris explains image rights are now so complicated they have led to HMRC restructuring tax allowances, transfers being left incomplete, and even prison sentences to some of the game’s greatest players.
