Dystonia is common and often functionally-debilitating in people with CP but can be hard to treat and hard to diagnose. This talk will outline how clinicians and caregivers describe dystonic movements in people with CP, emerging methods to quantify dystonia in people with CP, and the current evidence of pharmacologic and surgical treatments for dystonia in CP. At the end of this talk, clinicians should expect to have a better understanding of how to diagnose and treat dystonia in people with CP in their clinical practice.

Describe emerging methods to quantify dystonia in people with CP
Describe the existing evidence for pharmacologic and surgical treatments of dystonia in cerebral palsy.

Bhooma Aravamuthan MD, DPhil is an Assistant Professor, pediatric movement disorders specialist, and neuroscientist in the Division of Pediatric Neurology at the Washington University School of Medicine and the Cerebral Palsy Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. She completed her research doctorate at the University of Oxford in England, medical school and pediatrics residency at Washington University in St. Louis, and child neurology and movement disorders fellowships at Boston Children’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital before returning to Wash U as faculty. Her translational research on dystonia pathophysiology following neonatal brain injury is funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke has received awards from multiple organizations including the 2022 AAN Jon Stolk Award in Movement Disorders Research. Bhooma is a member of the UCP Research Committee.
