As Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the African Union High Representative for the Silencing the Guns campaign, once stated: “Without good governance, development in Africa is dead on arrival”.

According to the African Development Bank’s Tracking Africa’s Progress in Figures report (2014), between 2000 and 2012:

• 89% of African countries improved their capacity to deliver economic opportunity and human development.

• 67% of countries made progress in fostering political participation, gender equality, and human rights.

• 40% of countries saw an improvement in strengthening safety and the rule of law.

Many African countries are not hindered by well-informed regulations, incapable legal systems, or uneducated electorates.

Nor are they plagued by illegitimate democratic systems, uninformed citizens, or a lack of patriotism.

Africa’s biggest challenge lies in its well-thought out reforms, which often fail to move beyond written policies.

The real issue is the disconnect between governments, their reforms, and the actual implementation of those reforms.

External bodies expect Africa to change overnight.

Some believe that passing one or two reforms will be enough.

Others assume that Africa’s leaders will easily abandon systems that have been in place for decades.

A habit is not broken in a day, nor will corruption, exploitation, capital flight, or other challenges disappear in a year.

A better-governed Africa will be built through small, visible, and consistent actions that may seem insignificant in the moment but will accumulate over time.

Our role is not always to look down on Africa because it is not like other continents, or to give up on ourselves because we don’t fit the western portrait of “what Africa should be by now”.

Africa will get there on Africa’s time and in Africa’s way, but giving up isn’t an option.
