The NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) is a joint Earth-observing satellite mission developed by NASA and ISRO, launched on July 30, 2025, from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, India. It is the first satellite to use dual-frequency (L-band and S-band) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) to map Earth's land and ice surfaces every 12 days with high resolution (5-10 meters). NISAR aims to monitor ecosystems, cryosphere, natural hazards, and climate change, providing freely accessible data for disaster management, agriculture, and resource monitoring.
Mission: Joint NASA-ISRO project to observe Earth's surface changes using -- • L-band (NASA) and S-band (ISRO) SAR.
• Launch: July 30, 2025, via GSLV-F16 into a 743 km Sun-synchronous orbit.
• Capabilities: Maps global land/ice every 12 days, detects surface changes as small as centimeters, penetrates clouds/vegetation.
• Applications: Tracks ecosystems, ice mass, sea level, groundwater, and hazards like earthquakes, tsunamis, and landslides.
• Cost: ~$1.5 billion (ISRO: ₹788 crore, NASA: ~$1.12 billion).
• Data: Freely available within 1-2 days, urgent data within hours for disasters.
• Technology: Uses SweepSAR for high-resolution, wide-swath imaging; 12m mesh antenna.
