It’s 1981 and the downtown Albany stretch between Washington Avenue and Madison Avenue of Lark Street is the epicenter of the exploding, close knit, arts and original music scene. Entrepreneurs Mary Miller of Lark Beat Records and Dana Rudolph of After the Goldrush, shared a retail space on the strip. Them along with an another merchant as I recall (Paul?) wanted to let the world know what was happening on Lark so they organized the very first Larkfesf Street Music Festival. Four original local bands were tapped for the inaugural event without anyone knowing what was going to happen.
They decided they wanted to run a last minute commercial advertising it on then progressive radio station Q-104. Since Mary Miller had just launched her imprint Lark Beat Records with the Morons “Suburbanite” she naturally thought of their nifty little punker “Lark Street” for the soundtrack. A one minute 30 second adrenaline rush with TL’s rapid fire lyric of life on “The Street”. With a tight schedule the band bunkered down in Arabellum Studios and in one night recorded, mixed and mastered the track for delivery to the radio station the next day to use as a music bed for a DJ voice-over (Brehmer?, Peggy? Ellen? any one recall?).
The results lie here.. This video is the original studio recording loosely synced to the band performing the song in the window of Larkbeat Records/After the Goldfrush for an in-store performance (full live show coming).
As far as Larkfest goes The Young Reptiles, The A.D.s, the Units and the Morons were to play. The Units would have been the headliners but had a gig later in NYC so had to go on second following the Reptiles who shared their drummer. The ADs were next followed by the Morons who closed the evening in front of an estimated 11,000 people in attendance that day! They seized the moment and became part of the whirlwind of the festival itself ,the ultimate free party with no rules but no real trouble! The rest is history as the annual festiveal is a huge, commercial, mainstay event of Albany but in many a mere shadow with not much in common with the first one. The actual stage was on Hudson Ave with its back to Lark Street. If you were there you know.
Meanwhile the song, was perhaps going to be used as a flip side to the second single “The Egg is Cracking” but never was to be.
