An unusual scam recently made headlines in Japan. An 80-year-old woman from Hokkaido was tricked into believing she was speaking online with a real astronaut working in space. The scammer pretended to be in danger, claiming that his spaceship was “under attack” and that he urgently needed money to buy oxygen. Over time, the woman grew emotionally attached to him and wanted to help. Trusting the story, she sent him around 1 million yen, which is about 6,700 US dollars.
This strange case is an example of how romance scams are changing. Instead of using common excuses, the fraudsters created a dramatic space story that sounded exciting but impossible. Elderly people are often targeted in such scams because they can feel lonely, may be more trusting, and sometimes have savings that scammers want to steal.
Police in Japan have warned people not to believe these kinds of stories. They say if someone you only know online asks for money, especially with a strange or urgent reason, it is almost always a scam. Unfortunately, these crimes are becoming more common. In Japan, thousands of romance scams were reported last year, and the number is still rising.
The “astronaut scam” may sound bizarre, but it shows how easily criminals can manipulate emotions. By mixing love, urgency, and imagination, they convince victims to send money. Authorities are asking families to talk to older relatives and remind them to be careful, so fewer people fall victim to such traps.
