Motorcyclepedia historian Keith Jones walks us through the first part of the impressive Indian Timeline gallery, starting in 1901 with a replica of the very first Indian!
Back then, motorcycles looked very much like bicycles with a motor stuck in the middle. But each year they evolve and become a little bigger, heavier and more powerful than the year before. 1908 saw the introduction of the first v-twin - prior to that they were all single cylinder.
Headlights were first seen in 1910 and by 1914 there was even an attempt at making the lights electric and building an electric start. Unfortunately the battery technology of the day couldn’t quite keep up so the electric start was short lived here. Keith shows us an example of an electric start motor we have on display at the museum and describes it as quite heavy!
Museum co-founder, Ted Doering continues from the 1930’s mark. He explains how Paul du Pont purchased the Indian motorcycle company in 1931 after being an enthusiast from a young age. In his youth, Dupont had built his own motorcycle and so there was no holding him back when he finally had the chance to have his own motorcycle company!
Dupont brought something very unique to the Indian line and that was color variation. Up until that point the motorcycles had been primarily red so Dupont decided to introduce some different colors into the mix and did very well out of it!
Come visit us to explore this extraordinary gallery and learn something you didn't know about motorcycle history!
We’re open every week Thursday 5-8pm and Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 5pm.
