This courtroom session took place before Judge Raquel West, who presided over multiple criminal matters involving plea agreements, probation violations, competency findings, and trial settings. Throughout the proceedings, Judge West carefully ensured that each defendant understood their rights, the charges against them, and the legal consequences of their decisions.
The hearing began with Calvin Randall, who faced two felony charges stemming from May 17, 2024. The first charge involved unlawfully carrying a weapon on alcohol premises within a weapons-free zone, and the second charge was evading arrest with a vehicle. Judge Raquel West confirmed that Randall’s guilty pleas were entered freely and voluntarily, that he was mentally competent, and that he understood he was waiving his right to appeal. In accordance with the plea agreement, Judge West sentenced Randall to ten years in the Texas Department of Corrections on each case, with the sentences running concurrently. An additional case was dismissed, and Randall was formally warned that he is legally prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.
Next, the court addressed Fontau’s probation revocation case, originally tied to a state jail felony for theft of a firearm. The defendant admitted to multiple probation violations, including failure to report, failure to pay court fees, and committing new offenses. Judge Raquel West accepted his pleas of true and sentenced him to nine months in state jail, again emphasizing firearm possession restrictions.
The court then reviewed Racia Muton’s cases, focusing on competency. After reviewing a medical evaluation, Judge Raquel West ruled Muton competent to stand trial but granted a reset to allow defense counsel more time to review discovery.
Finally, Asa Joseph Jones appeared on a first-degree felony aggravated assault charge involving reckless firearm discharge. A 25-year plea offer was formally rejected, and Judge Raquel West ordered the case to be set for trial, noting the offer would expire.
Overall, the hearing highlighted Judge Raquel West’s firm but methodical approach to justice and courtroom procedure.
