People in the Ukrainian city of Kherson embraced arriving Ukrainian soldiers on the streets following Russia's withdrawal.

It comes after a Russian retreat that marked a triumphant milestone in Ukraine's push back against Moscow's invasion almost nine months ago.

On Sunday, the 126 territorial defence brigade published footage of the Russian flag being hit at Antonivskyi key Kherson bridge where the Ukrainian flag is now installed.

UKRAINE: PEOPLE CONTINUE TO CELEBRATE IN KHERSON

A jubilant crowd was still celebrating in Kherson on Sunday, even amid the distant thumps of artillery fire.

It comes after a Russian retreat which marked a triumphant milestone in Ukraine's push back against Moscow's invasion almost nine months ago.

"During the last three days my heart was filled with happiness because we waited so long for this. We looked forward to it," said Inna Kozhemiakina, a Kherson resident.

The remaining residents in the city lack water, medicine and food and there are shortages of key basics such as bread because of a lack of electricity.

The Ukrainian military is beginning the daunting task of clearing out explosive devices and restoring basic public services in the city.

On the main square, people lined up to ask soldiers to sign their flags and rewarded them with hugs. Some wept.

But some say they have to remain vigilant.

UKRAINE: BANKSY ARTWORK APPEARS IN WAR-TORN TOWN

Amid the ruins of war, the flowerings of art.
A delicate painting of a gymnast doing a handstand has popped up on the wall of a wrecked building outside of Kyiv and appears to be the work of the British graffiti artist known as Banksy.

Banksy posted photos on his Instagram page of the artwork in Borodyanka, northwest of Ukraine's capital.

The town was the target of shelling and fighting in the early stages of the Russian invasion, which turned apartment buildings into charred, bombed-out hulks.

The mural of the gymnast is in black and white and is painted so she looks like she is doing her handstand on the crumpled remains of concrete blocks that poke out of the blackened wall. Towering above her are the gutted, blown-apart innards of what were once apartments.

Another mural in the town - of a small boy doing a judo throw on a man - also looked like it might be Banksy's, although that wasn't posted on his Instagram page.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned on Sunday that the Kherson region still remained dangerous, three days after the end of Russia's occupation.

"First of all, there are mines. Unfortunately, one of our sappers was killed, and four others were injured while clearing mines," Zelenskyy said in his nightly address.

But even as locals welcomed the end of the eight-month siege, the evidence of Russia’s ruthless occupation was all around, and Russian forces still control some 70% of the wider Kherson region.

Kherson is also without electricity or running water, and food and medical supplies are short.

Residents said Russian troops plundered the city, carting away loot as they withdrew last week.

They also wrecked key public infrastructure before retreating across the wide Dnieper River to its east bank.
