Everyone is talking about AI taking jobs. Almost nobody is talking about how much water AI infrastructure can require.
Every time you use an AI model, your request is processed inside massive data centers packed with powerful computers.
Those machines generate enormous amounts of heat — and keeping data centers cool can require significant amounts of energy and, depending on the cooling system, water.
Some modern data centers can consume millions of litres of water per day. Research on cooling systems shows that direct evaporative cooling can result in water demand ranging from roughly 2 million to 19 million litres per day for mid- to hyperscale facilities, although actual consumption varies substantially by design, climate and cooling technology.
And this is becoming a real public debate.
New York introduced a one-year statewide moratorium on new hyperscale data centers in July 2026 while developing new environmental and infrastructure rules.
Public concern is also rising in the United States. A September 2026 Pew Research Center survey found that 60% of Americans would be uncomfortable with a new data center operating in their area, while 54% said data centers were mostly bad for the environment.
India is also entering this debate.
In Thane, hundreds of residents protested against Amazon's proposed hyperscale data center, raising concerns about water, electricity, noise and environmental impact. Reports cited a planned supply of around 12 million litres per day of treated sewage water.
But there is an important side to the story.
Amazon says its Thane facility will *not use potable water for cooling* and plans to use closed-loop cooling, with 115 kilolitres per day of treated sewage water allocated for landscaping and irrigation.
So the real question isn't simply:
“Are data centers bad?”
It's:
How much water and energy should AI infrastructure consume — especially in regions already facing water stress?
India is already dealing with significant water challenges. UNICEF notes that groundwater depletion is a major concern, while current national efforts under the Jal Jeevan Mission have substantially expanded rural household tap-water connections.
At the same time, AI and data centers can bring computing capacity, investment, digital infrastructure and economic activity.
So the challenge is finding a balance between AI growth and resource sustainability.
Because AI may change the way we work.
But it still needs something as basic as water to keep the machines running.
Watch till the end and understand the hidden environmental cost behind the AI revolution.
