Empathy must no longer be perceived as a soft, overtly feminine competence but as a powerful tool to grow and thrive that people, societies and businesses ignore at their peril. Walking through different communities and working with farmers, men, women and young aspiring youth, Olfa as a development expert, explored first-hand the impact of empathy or lack of it in people's lives as well as her own. Often people deal with empathy as a natural tendency, a virtue, an add-plus, in her presentation Olfa argues that empathy is an essential skill that we need to consciously work hard to acquire in order for us to gain knowledge and to effect positive change, because humanity cannot afford any more to continue being apathetic.

About the Speaker:

OlfaTantawi is a development professional with around 20 years of experience in the field. Throughout her career with various international development organizations she lead different teams of professionals to design and implement social protection programs to interlink government bodies with civil society and the private sector to support small farmers’ equitable access in high-value agro-food value chains. Her work also included designing different campaigns to advocate for economic, social, and political rights for disadvantaged communities. Olfa holds a Masters in Journalism and Mass Communication from AUC; her thesis had a focus on the conflicting media messages that both worlds East and West are producing, the misconceptions and the misinterpretations. In 2010, as an independent researcher she contributed to an international research project on religious broadcasting in the Middle East as part of the Cambridge Arab Media Project (CAMP) at the Center of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, University of Cambridge.
