The Greater Coucal (Centropus sinensis), also called “Bharadwaj” or “Crow Pheasant,” is a large, non-parasitic cuckoo with a glossy black body, chestnut wings, and piercing red eyes.
This field video presents authentic records from three localities in Pakistan, highlighting the bird’s secretive yet charismatic presence:
📍 Islamabad – 16 Aug 2024, 4:53 PM
📍 Jagal, Haripur (KPK) – 15 Oct 2024, 2:34 PM
📍 Chakwal, Lakhwal Dam – 16 Aug 2025, 2:11 PM
🎥 Key highlights include:
• Red-eyed adult basking in Islamabad
• Foraging and walking behavior on brick walls at Haripur
• Chestnut wings flashing through scrub foliage at Chakwal
The Greater Coucal is a symbol of dense vegetative cover in semi-urban, agricultural, and scrub-wetland habitats. Its deep “coop-coop” calls are often heard before the bird is seen.
