His consulting work was exposed through a FOIA lawsuit, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest during his tenure as Defense Secretary. Mattis, a vocal supporter of the UAE, maintained a steadfast silence about the scope and duration of his work as a military adviser.

Conflicting accounts exist regarding whether Mattis was paid for his services, documents suggest compensation, while a spokesman claims he worked for free. The UAE has employed numerous retired U.S. military personnel as consultants, leading to concerns about potential influence.

Mattis's relationship with Sheikh Mohamed dates back to 2011, with shared concerns about Iran's influence and a growing military partnership. Mattis's application for foreign employment detailed advising the UAE on the Yemen campaign, with a handwritten note stating he would be compensated.

Federal approval for Mattis's foreign consulting role was swift, taking only two months, in contrast to the usual lengthy review process for veterans. The lack of disclosure regarding Mattis's role led to diplomats and officials in charge of U.S. Middle East policy being unaware of his advisory position.

Mattis did not include his UAE consulting job in financial disclosure forms, raising questions about transparency and accountability. Mattis's consulting work was exposed by CNN in 2017, leading to assertions that he worked for free, advising the UAE on military rebuilding.

The UAE's involvement in the Yemen war faced criticism for human rights violations, including allegations of operating secret prisons and civilian casualties. Mattis warned in 2018 of U.S. support withdrawal for the coalition if it didn't protect civilians better, aligning with concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

Mattis resigned as Defense Secretary in 2018, and upon returning to the private sector, sought federal approval for a paid speaking engagement in Abu Dhabi. Documents reveal that Mattis initially listed a $100,000 honorarium for the speech, but his spokesman later claimed he did not receive compensation.

The Yemen war continues, with Houthi rebels remaining strong, and recent military strikes in response to attacks on merchant ships escalating tensions in the region.
