The investigation into Thompson's murder revealed that Mangione had traveled from Atlanta to New York prior to the shooting. Surveillance footage captured a masked individual approaching Thompson outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel on December 4, 2024, and fatally shooting him before fleeing the scene on a bicycle.

Authorities are examining Mangione's background and motivations, including his expressed frustrations with the U.S. healthcare system and possible personal health issues, such as chronic back problems that required surgery earlier in the year.


Mangione faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder, forgery, and weapons offenses. He is currently being held without bail, pending extradition to New York for trial.
