From 1915 through the 1920s, a major cultural reform movement swept through China, climaxing with the anti-imperialist May 4th Movement of 1919. In part 4 of my series on Chinese communism, I'm looking into these reforms and a few of the most prominent figures behind them, as background to the beginning's of Chinese leftism.
I'm trying to release new videos every two weeks, so be sure to subscribe so you don't miss any!
Recommended Further Readings:
Chow Tse-tung - The May Fourth Movement: Intellectual Revolution in Modern China
Great overview of the movement. It's old, but very comprehensive.
Timothy B. Weston - The Power of Position: Beijing University, Intellectuals, and Chinese Political Culture, 1898-1929
My main source on Cai Yuanpei's university reforms.
Elisabeth Kaske - The Politics of Language in Chinese Education, 1895-1919
A good source on the Vernacular Writing Movement
Daniel K. Gardner - Confucianism: A Very Short Introduction
The Very Short Introductions series is always surprisingly good.
Lu Xun - Diary of a Madman & The True Story of Ah Q are great reads. Volume 2 of his selected works is also great for his essays.
Music Used:
"Dragon Boat Racing" - By He Liutang, 1920s
"Su Wu the Shepherd" - 1910s
"Spring Outing" - By Li Shutong, 1913
"Moaning in Sickness" - By Liu Tianhua, 1918
"The Great River Flows to the East" - By Qing Zhu
"Liuniang Getting Drunk Thrice" & "Victorious Return" - By Yin Zizhong
I didn't have time to talk about it in the video, but musical reform was also a part of the New Culture Movement, and the songs used all arose from it.
Videos Used:
"Beginning of the Great Revival" aka "The Founding of a Party" - (2011)
Tells the story of the founding of the CCP. I thought it was fun.
"Confucius" (2010) - I was a little worried it would throw people that Chow Yun-fat plays Confucius here after I've already pretty prominently used clips of him playing Yuan Shikai in "Beginning of the Great Revival". So this is me telling you, "Don't be confused, it's a different movie."
"A Doll's House" (1973)
"China: A Century of Revolution" - A bad documentary you can find on youtube. It has lots of good footage though.
