Driving my favourite mountain road in Austria - the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, one of the most scenic roads in Austrian Alps. The 48 kilometers (30 miles) long Grossglockner High Alpine Road was completed in 1935, it winds through the Hohe Tauern National Park and climbs to an altitude above 2500 meters (8200 ft).
The road leads to the Kaiser Franz Josefs Höhe viewpoint where visitors can admire Austria’s highest peak, the Grossglockner (3798 m ~ 12461 ft), the Pasterze Glacier and the most popular ... marmots. Along the route there are several visitor centers, hiking trails, museums, and exhibitions about local wildlife, geology and the history of Alpine exploration.
