Thirteen learners have lost their lives following a tragic road accident involving a scholar transport minibus in Vanderbijlpark, south of Johannesburg.
According to authorities, the private minibus taxi was transporting learners from several schools when it collided with a truck and veered off the road. Several others, including the driver, were seriously injured and taken to hospital. One learner later passed away, bringing the confirmed death toll to 13.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Education MEC Matome Chiloane visited the scene, raising concerns about gaps in private scholar transport regulation. Police have opened a culpable homicide case as investigations continue.
The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that psychosocial support will be provided to affected families, learners, and educators.
