I have about 100 hours of attempts. The fight became drastically easier once I realized you can mitigate the amount of minis Onyxia deploys if you overload the map with whelp eggs. As such, whelp eggs and whelp egg drake are crucial for this strat. That 100 hours of attempts could have easily been more like 5 if I knew of this trick right away.

OPENING

Your available starting minis will be RNG so you will have to find an opening that works with your load out if it is different than mine. You can slightly alter your starting minis by swapping the top row minis, but bottom row doesn’t change anything if you swap them around… Every second matters here and placement/timing is crucial for success. I have perfected my opening because I have attempted Onyxia a million times, so I make it look easy but that’s because I practiced a ton and tried many different setups. This is the most important thing to get down to set yourself up for success throughout the rest of the encounter.

WHELP EGGS

Only use whelp eggs offensively if you need to protect wagons or defend towers, otherwise 2-3x stacks on the top chest between each phase is priority, then the rest can be placed around the center tower (since they won’t be destroyed during phase transitions and therefore mitigate the amount of minis Onyxia will deploy each phase). I try to alternate the lanes I send drake down so that the eggs she drops can be spread out in case any get destroyed on one side. You can use eggs to distract phase 3 mini bosses as well, and just throw them at onyxia when you are trying to down her after the mini bosses are dealt with.

NOTES

I prefer poison quilboar since you can throw it at Onyxia for a bit of damage. Even the smallest amount of damage can make all the difference between a perfectly timed phase transition or beating the timer. I would have had a kill a lot sooner had I used poison quilboar the entire time. I got her to less than 1% before and a single poison quilboar probably would have won me that game.

If you master your opening / phase 1 then phase 2 is relatively simple as well, and phase 3 still pretty much comes down to luck, but you can try to be prepared for mini bosses if you have a rend / drake down each lane (not in kill zone) and nearly full gold by the time phase 3 starts, and you have placed a few stacks of whelp eggs near the top chest, of course. Then you can distract the bosses immediately with quilboar/eggs and try to nuke down the towers while they are distracted. Let the mini bosses aggro the towers before you send minis to kill them so they don’t just die and waste precious gold and time.
