This footage was from March 2015 when I met up with a tour group facilitated by photographer and Urban Explorer - Will Ellis who had spent time exploring the Dead Horse Bay area and abandoned locations around New York City. I knew of his abandoned photography from a video that was put together of him exploring Kings Park Psychiatric Center in Long Island, which I had been doing at that time. I met Will at the release party and book signing of “Abandoned NYC”.

He even got to explore North Brother Island, a place I tried to get permission to do, but it never came to fruition.

This tour event was organized by “Untapped Cities” and if you are in the New York City Area I recommend you check to see what great events are available to tour through them. There are lots of great articles on abandoned places, historic buildings, covering New York City, and the surrounding area.

I ended up providing photography for two different articles (for Untapped Cities) that had to do with an abandoned asylum I had filmed and explored. One of the articles covered the outer filming location for the Netflix show “Orange is the new black”, which is filmed on a small portion of the abandoned asylum. I put out a video log on my channel from the time I was on the set of that show, and I will leave a link to that in the description as well.

Dead Horse Bay is a coastal area where remnants of the past are washed up on its shores.
It got its name in the mid 1800’s when there were horse-rendering plants surrounding the beach. The carcasses of the horses captured in New York City were used to manufacture glue, fertilizer, and other products. The chopped and boiled bones would later be dumped into the islands Atlantic Ocean waters.

Early into the 20th Century they switched from horses to fish rendering which continued the manufacturing of fish oil into the 1930’s when the supplies of fish became scarce.

Eventually they used the area for large garbage incineration and landfill. There was an explosion in 1950’s where garbage was blasted out all over the bay. Leaving much of New York Cities past on display for anyone who cared to walk the shores of the beach. Much of it being throw away containers of products and consumables used by the human inhabitants of the city. There were so many glass bottled containers littering the beach that it was eventually given the name “Bottle Beach”.

I planned to return and explore more by myself at this location as well as Floyd Bennet Field. Unfortunately, that never happened.
