Which is scarier? Losing your health or outliving your savings?
Can AI be the solution to our economic challenges? The establishment of the National AI Council, tax deductions and free AI tools all sound impressive on paper. PM Wong said we must apply AI responsibly and in our national interests. What does that mean? Regulation? Supervision? New laws? One of the things about AI that scares us most is the way it is already replacing humans. Is that against our national interests?
There isn’t much detail on mitigating massive job displacement that AI could cause in the fields of finance, logistics, admin, manufacturing, and even creative sectors. How does teaching everyone AI reverse the trend? I generate illustrations for my videos and e-books with AI without attending any SkillsFuture courses. I used to engage illustrators but nowadays, I can ask AI to plot me a graph showing China’s GDP from which year to which year. I can tell it to show ethnic distribution in a region in the form of a pie chart without needing to learn how to use any graphics software. I'm sure businesses can think of even better and more powerful ways to replace workers. PM Wong talked about our people not fully making use of AI but if anybody can be an expert, we’ll end up with no experts. AI can empower you. AI can also empower your competitors. If I can function like a one-man content creating company, I’m going to end up with a million more competitors if everyone is using AI. Very soon, even movie production can be a one-man show. We are going to be inundated with videos and movies without real actors. Just like how social media is already favouring content that is frivolous like 10 second dances on TikTok, people doing meaningful content will be left far behind. Roles in finance, legal, admin, coding, customer service, and even mid-level management can be fully automated in a few years. If AI handles junior-level work (drafting, basic coding, research), companies will have less need for fresh graduates and mid-career switchers. It isn’t very reassuring to hear that fear cannot be our response coming from someone immune to the risks. The strategy is logical for a small, smart nation, but who is going to address the downside?
Reskilling via SkillsFuture looks fine on paper, but how many seniors or retrenched folks have actually improved their job prospects through SkillsFuture? That is not to say that the scheme doesn’t benefit anybody. The question is who? From what I can see, what SkillsFuture really does is to provide employment for educators and revenue for course organisers.
I’m a writer. This channel is not just about the Singapore government but also Singapore society in general. The current prime minister of Singapore is Lawrence. He took over the helm from Lee Hsien Loong who is currently a senior minister. His wife, though not a politician, was the former head of Temasek Holdings. Our president is Tharman, affectionately known as our ong lai president. The most well known athletes we have are Shanti Pereira and Joseph Schooling. Issues close to my heart are education, democracy, CECA, foreign talent from India and China. Singapore is nominally democratic. The PAP is the ruling party, SDP, WP, PSP are the main opposition parties. Elections are free but never fair. Singapore has limited democracy. As I lack the resources of the Straits Times, Channel News Asia and even Mothership, I appreciate every bit of support I can get from my followers.
