In this video, we explain the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), an important current affairs topic for UPSC, State PSC, and other competitive exams.
📌 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI)
The Global MPI is released by:
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI)
It measures poverty beyond income and focuses on multiple deprivations across three major dimensions:
Health
Education
Standard of Living
Key indicators include:
Nutrition
Child mortality
Years of schooling
School attendance
Access to drinking water
Sanitation
Electricity
Clean cooking fuel
Housing and assets
Each dimension carries equal weight, and the total weight is divided among its indicators.
📌 India’s National Multidimensional Poverty Index
India’s MPI is developed by NITI Aayog using the global MPI framework.
In addition to global indicators, India includes extra indicators such as:
Maternal health
Bank account ownership
This makes India’s MPI more context-specific and aligned with national development priorities.
