300g Flour (plain)
400ml Water (hand warm)
1Tsp Salt
1Tsp Sugar
1 Tsp Baking powder
1 Sachet dry yeast (7g)
Pour the water in a bowl, add the yeast and stir for a few seconds. Add the flour, sugar and salt, stir roughly and add the baking powder. Stir once more then cover the bowl with clingfilm and leave to rise for at least an hour. The dough is ready when it has risen by around 10-15% and little bubbles appear.
Heat a frying pan to a medium temperature. Grease the metal rings with melted butter and brush the frying pan with a little bit butter too.
Give the batter a stir, then pour into the rings and leave it for around 8-10min. Remember, they are going to rise as they cook, so don’t fill the rings to the top. Once the crumpets are getting nice little holes and the batter looks almost “dry” from above, they are almost ready. Remove from the rings, flip them and cook for another 10-20 seconds.
You can eat your crumpets straight away or reheat later. They are best enjoyed with… well, that’s up to you!
