England’s Craziest Runway… You Get ONE Chance!

why would anyone build an airstrip into the side of a hill — with NO go-around?

Hidden in the Suffolk countryside is one of England’s most unusual and challenging grass strips. This strip is short, steep, one-way in and out, and once you're on short final, you’re fully committed. Miss it — and there are no second chances.

Five years ago, this was the very first airfield I ever filmed for the channel — and my first visit here left me seriously questioning my confidence after I almost clipped a tree. With limited experience in my aircraft at the time, the slope, the wind, and the lack of escape options made it one of the most intimidating landings I’d ever attempted.

In this video, I return to see how time and experience have changed things. From the cockpit, I talk through the unique circuit, the deceptive visuals, the steepest part of the runway, and why wind here can make or break the landing.

After landing, I spend time with my friend Tim, who knows this airfield better than almost anyone and documents this remarkable strip on his own channel. Huge thanks to Tim for his help and hospitality.

I fly a 2011 PiperSport — also known as the PS28 in Europe or the SportCruiser in the USA, where it’s classed as an LSA. In the UK it’s a Part 21 aircraft, requiring a full licence. It’s a brilliant little machine: economical to run, cruising at around 100–105 knots, and perfectly suited to short, challenging grass strips like this.
