“During the Hasina government, police brutality reached such levels that we could not live without shame; we detest those incidents. Now, under this interim government, we can never expect the police to attack again with the intent of killing our children. Where do they get such audacity—how do they dare? Do they think they can continue sitting in their chairs after killing our children? We do not accept this, and we cannot accept it.”

STORYLINE:
Clashes erupted in Bangladesh's capital on Friday between police and protesters as demonstrators took to the streets over the death of student activist Sharif Osman Hadi in December.
Hadi took part in the 2024 political uprising that ended former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's 15-year rule and planned to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming elections.
Police used baton charges and sound grenades to disperse protesters who had gathered near the residence of the leader of Bangladesh's interim government.
Hadi died in a hospital in Singapore after being shot on December 12 in Dhaka.
The news of his death triggered violence in December, with groups of protesters attacking and torching the offices of two leading national dailies.
At the time, the country’s interim leader, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, urged for people to stay calm.
Hadi was a fierce critic of both neighboring India and Hasina, who has been in exile since August 5, 2024, when she fled Bangladesh.
Bangladesh has been going through a critical transition under Yunus in a bid to return to democracy through the upcoming elections.
