“Let go” isn’t a slogan — it’s a skill.
At Anāthapiṇḍika’s deathbed, Ven. Sāriputta taught a radical practice: do not let consciousness depend on anything — sights, sounds, the body, even refined formless states. Anāthapiṇḍika wept; Sāriputta said such talks are rarely given to laypeople. Why? Because true letting go requires know-how, not force.
In this deep dive, you’ll learn the Buddha’s 5-step method for release:
1️⃣ Origination — what inner causes fabricate this state?
2️⃣ Passing away — how does it end?
3️⃣ Allure — what exactly pulls you in?
4️⃣ Drawbacks — inconstancy, stress, not-self (it can’t be relied on).
5️⃣ Escape — dispassion when drawbacks outweigh allure.
Key insights you won’t want to miss:
The trap of blanking out (non-perception) vs awakening — why “The Big Sleep” is not nibbāna.
How bodily, verbal, mental fabrications (breath, self-talk, perceptions) are tools to uncover and release craving.
Why even consciousness depends on its object — and what opens when there’s nothing left to land on.
The ladder strategy (Ajaan Mahā Boowa): let go rung-by-rung—jhana by jhana—until the roof, then release the ladder.
Two routes to dispassion: simple seeing vs applying skillful fabrication when allure runs deep.
☸️ Letting go is reasoned freedom: when you truly see “not worth it,” release happens by itself.
