Ankara warned that it reserves the right to respond to any hostile action while urging all parties to avoid steps that could escalate the conflict further. The interception marks a significant development, as Turkey — a member of NATO sharing a 500-kilometre border with Iran — had until now been spared direct missile threats in the widening war.

The conflict escalated after the United States and Israel launched strikes that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Tehran has since targeted Israel and Gulf states hosting US bases.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had previously called for de-escalation, warning that the region could not withstand further destabilisation. Turkey’s foreign minister also cautioned against efforts aimed at regime change in Iran.
