The Feather Leaf Inn is a vegan retreat center and boutique hotel on the shores of the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. The inn is made up of restored 260-year-old historic buildings on 10 oceanfront acres on the island of St. Croix. A new food forest has been planted with a large variety of tropical fruit and nut trees. And the main house gallery porch is large enough to seat 40 people for special occasion sunset dinners. The coral reefs and shipwrecks in front of the Feather Leaf Inn offer one of the best places in the Caribbean to scuba dive according to USA Today. This is a place to escape city life, unplug and relax. It’s a place to enjoy natural beauty, swing in a hammock, marvel at the ancient baobab trees, bicycle along the coast or swim in the warm water of the Caribbean.

Corina Marks co-owns and manages the Feather Leaf Inn. This unique nature-based Caribbean hotel aims to engage guests in social and environmental issues, especially our global impact on coral reefs. Corina is a marine scientist with a Masters of Science in coastal science and policy from California State University, Monterey Bay. Corina has spent her career applying advances in technology to learn more about marine habitats. She worked as a research technician at Moss Landing Marine Labs and was instrumental in designing and testing deep-sea cameras to study fish populations. Her research includes collaboration with fishermen, scientists, policy makers, captains, academics, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) and government agencies such as the National Marine Fishery Service, a division of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Aboard research vessels she’s deployed stereoscopic camera systems with laser guides to measure and identify key indicator fish species inside and outside of marine protected areas. Corina has crossed the Pacific Ocean 19 times as a partner scientist on cargo ships deploying marine monitoring equipment. She is a certified scientific diver and educator and has trained many citizen scientists to monitor reefs through the organization Reef Check Worldwide. With a background in geographic information systems (GIS) and science communication, she is dedicated, not only to advancements in research, but to education and involvement of stakeholders in coastal stewardship.
At the Feather Leaf Inn Corina leads tours for bicycle groups of the historic property while sharing impactful actions all of us can take to nurture the coral reefs that are so vital to the economic integrity of our islands. Recently, a new partnership with The Nature Conservancy has led to the deployment and maintenance of a coral larvae rearing pool as well as continued reef monitoring projects at the Feather Leaf Inn.
Ryan Flegal rode his bicycle 12,000 miles from Los Angeles, California to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He crossed 13 countries on two continents over 15 months learning about other cultures, meeting new people and seeing first-hand the impact of our consumerism on the natural world. Witnessing the aftermath of over-fishing, deforestation, and mining, Ryan resolved to help others experience solutions to our environmental challenges. Years later, he and his partner, Corina Marks, opened a vegan hotel and retreat center, the Feather Leaf Inn.
Ryan has been vegan for decades. In college he was president of the vegan club, the largest and most active club on campus. The vegan club served a free picnic lunch every week and featured a different guest celebrity, medical doctor or environmental expert. The college club’s board of advisors included Howard Lyman and Dr. Michael Klaper. And speakers included poets, comedians and actors like Ed Begley, Jr.
Now Ryan and his partner have restored a 260-year-old buildings on the National Registry of Historic Places on the island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. These stone, coral and Danish brick buildings and 10 oceanfront acres make up the Feather Leaf Inn, a vegan hotel and retreat center. The past three years have been spent on restoration and most of the rooms are ready and accepting guests. The grand opening of the completed restoration will be in the next few months. The Feather Leaf Inn hosts retreats and conferences and is a destination wedding location.
