Summary
Chaos in Late Silla: At the end of the Silla Dynasty, politics were confused, and powerful local lords called "Hojok" (호족) appeared in the provinces.
The Later Three Kingdoms: Gyeon Hwon founded Later Baekje, and Gung-ye founded Later Goguryeo.
Founding of Goryeo: Gung-ye ruled vaguely and violently. Wang Geon drove him out and became King, naming the country "Goryeo" (918).
True Unification: Wang Geon accepted the surrender of Later Baekje and Silla, and even embraced the people of Balhae. This was the true unification of the Later Three Kingdoms!
Wang Geon's Policies: He lowered taxes for the people and married daughters of powerful local families (Hojok) to make them his allies.
Gwangjong & The Exam: Later, King Gwangjong introduced the "Gwageo" (civil service exam) to select government officials based on ability, not just family background.
