"Castle Walls" was released in the summer of 1977 on Styx's seventh studio album, The Grand Illusion. Pound for pound, The Grand Illusion was one of my very favorite albums of the late 70's...it played well at all times and had something for almost everyone...and always sounded fresh, never stale! This is a video update for an old one I made many years ago. It's not quite right, but it's what I got today! ;-)
About the Song/Album/Artist (summary from Wikipedia):
The Grand Illusion is the seventh studio album by American rock band Styx. Recorded at Paragon Recording Studios in Chicago, the album was released on July 7, 1977, by A&M Records. The release was a smash worldwide, selling three million copies in the US (Triple Platinum) alone. Some estimates have the album at over 6 million copies sold. The album launched the band to stardom and spawned the hit singles "Come Sail Away" and "Fooling Yourself." The title track also received substantial FM airplay, but was never released as an official single.
As with much of Styx's catalog, many of the songs have quasi-medieval/fantasy lyrics and themes. Some are allegories and commentaries on contemporary American life and the members' experiences in an American rock band in the late 1970s, such as "Castle Walls," "Superstars," "Miss America" and the title track, which touches on "The Grand Illusion" of fame and fortune and how they are not what they appear.
About the audio:
I went back and forth and almost used the Audio Fidelity remaster (because it really does sound amazing), but in the end I went with a 192Khz FLAC from vinyl...there is maybe a bit more depth. Needless to say...play it on a full range system for best results! LOL!
About the video:
I've been playing with and making lots of random ai effects for various projects I'd like to try, and ended up kinda locked into working on an upgrade I'd started for Castle Walls many years ago...it was always a video I wanted to try and improve. Some of the other things I'm working on have been moving much faster that Castle Walls project....it has been one of the most challenging things I've worked with and I never could get the video I was wanting, and I had to just edit it in a different way to make something work. I hate to work for so long to get a video just to the point where it COULD be shared and then uploading because a video is needed, without spending really any time on making the final adjustments/edits that would pretty easily take it to a bit higher level...but until I maybe get around to a touch up editing out a few of the remaining draft effects (and maybe redo some of the ai work when I get more skills) with something better, I hope you enjoy this one! Original video from 2011: • Castle Walls - Styx (1977)
...and one I made for "Man in the Wilderness" • Man In The Wilderness - Styx (1977)
I started something years ago also for "Come Sail Away", but not too anxious to go there...I'd love to maybe try something for "The Grand Illusion", or "Superstars" or "Miss America" though! Any of those three would be interesting play with.
[Lyrics}
Once in a dream
Far beyond these castle walls
Down by the bay where the
Moonlit water falls
I stood alone while the minstrel sang his song
So afraid I'd lost my soul
There in the fog his song kept calling me
Leading me on with its haunting melody
Deep in my heart a voice kept echoing
I knew I'd soon be wandering
Far beyond these castle walls
Where the distant harbor meets the sky
There the battle raged like hell
And every dove had lost its will to fly
Far beyond these castle walls
Where I thought I heard Tiresias say
Life is never what it seems
And every man must meet his destiny
Повторяем попытку...
