Here’s the truth: you don’t need a high IQ to get better at chess—just the right habits.
The core thinking process comes down to three steps (in any order) every time it’s your turn:
1️⃣ Understand your opponent’s move – What did they play and what does it change?
2️⃣ Define your plan – What do you want to achieve in this position?
3️⃣ Calculate – Based on your plan and the position, find the best move.
Beyond this, you need tactical vision (which must be trained regularly) and a strong mental game, especially above 1800. This includes:
✔ Handling provocation and mistakes
✔ Staying focused on the game, not distractions (like winning, or personal surroundings or situations)
✔ Managing pressure and fear (and putting that on your opponent)
✔ Being patient and applying psychological pressure on your opponent
In this video, we’ll focus on the most important habit: understanding your opponent’s plan and moves. Too many times people blunder because they forget the plans of their opponent. But when you do keep track, this gives you a foundation to create your own plan and calculate effectively with a concrete understanding of the position.
Hope this helps you on your journey to 2000+!
