HUMAN BEINGS ARE NOW CONNECTED IN WAYS WE HAVE NEVER BEEN AT ANY TIME IN OUR HISTORY. FIRST WITH BOOKS, THEN NEWSPAPERS AND RADIO, TELEVISION AND NOW OF COURSE THE INTERNET AND SOCIAL MEDIA. WITH THESE WE CAN EASILY LEARN ABOUT THE AMAZING ACHIEVEMENTS HUMANITY IS CAPABLE OF. AT THE SAME TIME, WE CAN ALSO WITNESS THE HORRORS THAT MAN HAS BROUGHT UPON HIMSELF. THERE ARE NUMEROUS CONFLICTS IN THE WORLD THAT INVOLVE DEPRAVED CRUELTY AND YOU MAY VERY WELL BE ASKING YOURSELF, “ARE WE JUST A BUNCH OF SAVAGES LIVING IN A TECHNOLOGICALLY MODERN WORLD?”
IN THIS EPISODE, WE ARE GOING TO EVALUATE WHAT IT MEANS TO BE CIVILIZED FROM A VERY SIMPLE BUT IMPORTANT PERSPECTIVE. WE ARE NOT GOING TO EXAMINE HOW MUCH TECHNOLOGY WE HAVE IN OUR HOMES, HOW COMPLICATED THE TAX LAWS ARE OR THE TOTAL NUMBER OF DISEASES WE HAVE CURED.
INSTEAD, WE ARE GOING TO ANSWER THE QUESTION, “WHAT IS THE MOST BASIC TRAIT FOR PEOPLE TO BE CONSIDERED CIVILIZED?”
